ICD-10-CM Diagnosis Coding System

This presentation will provide an overview of the ICD-10-CM diagnosis coding system, including information related to the October 1, 2015 national transition from ICD-9-CM, which has been in use in the United States since 1979, to ICD-10-CM. These diagnosis coding systems serve as the language in which clinical information about a patient’s health conditions are transmitted between health care providers and payers, for purposes of reimbursement. Beginning on October 1, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), which creates the ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM systems, will only accept diagnosis codes in the form of ICD-10-CM, becoming the standard for all payers.

Objectives:

1. State what ICD-10 (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems, 10th Revision) codes mean and what they are used for in health care
2. Explain the difference between ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM Coding Systems
3. Understand when the requirements to use ICD-10-CM codes will go into effect
4. Based on various pharmacy practice settings, list key steps that need to be taken to ensure a smooth transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM codes
5. List resources to aid in the transition from ICD-9-CM to ICD-10-CM codes
