Recognizing Today's Leaders in the Field of Pharmacy

HAROLD R. POPP AWARD

John Hoeschen has long been a passionate and tireless advocate for independent pharmacy in Minnesota. His deep experience, combined with an unwavering commitment to patient-centered care, has made him a trusted mentor and leader in the profession. Whether he's mentoring newer pharmacists, promoting his pharmacy in the media, or speaking at the Capitol, John brings energy, clarity, and conviction to every conversation.

He has been a consistent and powerful voice at legislative events, using his platform to defend and elevate the role of independent pharmacies in our healthcare system. John's dedication to advocacy, education, and community engagement makes him a true champion for the profession—and a deserving recipient of this recognition.

This recognition, sponsored by MPhA, was established in 1969 in honor of the late Senator Harold R. Popp who was known to support the profession tremendously during his lifetime.

BOWL OF HYGEIA AWARD

Dr. Deb Keaveny, owner of Keaveny Drug in Winsted, MN, is a champion of independent pharmacy in Minnesota. As President of Pharmacists United for Truth and Transparency (PUTT) and founder of MnIndys, Deb has been a tireless advocate for local pharmacies and the patients they serve. Her leadership has brought statewide attention to the challenges facing community pharmacies and helped build a powerful coalition for change.

Since 2023, Deb has been at the forefront of a major legislative effort to reform how Minnesota’s Medicaid program reimburses pharmacies. Her advocacy, public testimony, and media engagement were instrumental in the passage of this landmark legislation in 2025. Deb’s impact also extends nationally, with her antitrust litigation efforts helping to protect independent pharmacies across the country. Her courage, persistence, and vision make her a truly deserving recipient of this honor.

Established in 1958, The Bowl of Hygeia award is sponsored by the American Pharmacists Association Foundation and the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations.

DISTINGUISHED YOUNG PHARMACIST AWARD

Dr. Christine Kroger
In just nine years of practice, Dr. Christine Kroger has made a national impact on the future of pharmacy through her groundbreaking work in pharmacogenomics at Allina Health. From building a comprehensive program that spans multiple specialties to shaping national policy and clinical guidelines, her leadership and innovation have advanced precision medicine and expanded access to personalized care across Minnesota.

Beyond her clinical excellence, Dr. Kroger is a dedicated mentor, educator, and advocate. She has trained the next generation of pharmacists, contributed to state and national pharmacy leadership, and remained deeply committed to serving rural communities through her clinical practice. Her remarkable achievements and passion for the profession make her a truly deserving recipient of this award.

This award is presented by Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company, nationally recognized as a leader in providing insurance products and risk management solutions to Pharmacy professionals.

EXCELLENCE IN INNOVATION AWARD

Dr. Andrew Russell has quickly become a leading voice for independent pharmacy in Minnesota. As an active member of both Pharmacists United for Truth and Transparency (PUTT) and MnIndys, he works tirelessly to raise awareness about the challenges facing local pharmacies and their patients. Since 2023, Andrew has played a pivotal role in legislative efforts to reform how Minnesota’s Medicaid program reimburses pharmacies—efforts that will not only stabilize community pharmacy funding but also reduce taxpayer costs and curb the influence of Pharmacy Benefit Managers.

His advocacy, including public testimony and direct engagement with lawmakers, was instrumental in the passage of this landmark legislation signed into law in June 2025. Andrew’s leadership, commitment to his community, and bold vision for the future of pharmacy make him a deserving honoree.

The Excellence in Innovation Award is a national award coordinated by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, and generously sponsored by Upsher-Smith Laboratories.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN AWARD

Kristen Peterson has been a cornerstone of the Welia Health pharmacy team for six years, where her leadership, problem-solving, and mentorship have made a lasting impact. She played a key role in launching the Meds to Beds program, navigating complex systems and uniting teams across departments to improve patient care.

Kristen is known for her ability to keep operations running smoothly, her dedication to training new technicians, and her willingness to jump in wherever she’s needed. Beyond the pharmacy, Kristen is a committed community member, actively involved in Cub Scouts and always ready to lend a hand. Her humor, flexibility, and heart make her not only an exceptional technician but also a role model and leader in every sense.

PHARMACY ADVOCACY AWARD

Dr. Jordan Banister has quickly become a driving force in pharmacy advocacy across Minnesota. Over the past few years, she has played a key role in organizing Pharmacy Legislative Day—helping lead efforts in 2023, facilitating a roundtable in 2024, and navigating last-minute changes in 2025 due to a snowstorm. Her leadership and adaptability have ensured these events remained impactful and well attended.

Jordan also helped launch the first-ever Pharmacy Advocacy TOAST event, securing vital funding for ongoing advocacy efforts. Most recently, she worked alongside lobbyist Buck Humphrey and Representative Dave Baker to introduce legislation allowing pharmacists to prescribe Medication Assisted Treatment—an important step in addressing the opioid crisis and provider shortages. Her dedication, initiative, and passion for the profession make her a standout leader in Minnesota pharmacy.
