Scam Alert: Health Professionals Targeted

Friday, November 22, 2019   (0 Comments)

From Minnesota Medical Association newsletter, Nov. 21: Minnesota physicians and other health professionals are being targeted by scammers who pose as representatives of the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice (BMP) or the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). MPhA has heard from a few of our members who have also been targets.

Scammers are able to make an incoming phone number look like it is from a government agency; the scammer may have a license number of a health care professional (that is public information). The callers tell victims that if they do not pay a fee (sometimes quoted as many thousands of dollars), enforcement action will be taken.

Law enforcement agents will not contact health care providers by phone to demand money or any other form of payment. If you receive such a call, refuse the demand and immediately report the threat. The DEA has an online form. Read more at the Board of Medical Practice website.
