Description
The Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum was inspired by the Deep Portage Pharmaceutical Care Conference hosted for several years by the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy Peters Institute of Pharmaceutical Care and then by Medication Management Systems. The 2017 Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum is brought to you by a group of Minnesota pharmaceutical care practitioners hoping to revive the spirit and intent of Deep Portage in partnership with the Minnesota Pharmacists Association.
This conference has brought together pharmaceutical care students, faculty, and practitioners from around the world to explore the practice as defined in the Pharmaceutical Care Practice Standards (Cipolle, Strand, and Morley, 2012).
The purpose of the Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum is to illuminate issues related to the practice of pharmaceutical care, foster collegiality among students, faculty and practitioners and to invigorate the practice as the cornerstone of pharmacy. The second annual Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum will provide an opportunity to develop, collaborate, and reflect on the concept of building bridges to strengthen patient care.
The goals of this year’s conference are to discuss concepts and strategies to build strong interdisciplinary teams, learner to practitioner, community connections, coordination of care, and patient relationships for better patient care
Background
Previously, the Deep Portage Conference, created an environment fostering innovative practice ideas and concepts. As a result of this, concepts such as the medication experience, the Phillip’s Neighborhood Clinic’s student-run pharmaceutical care practice, and understanding the development of pharmaceutical care students and practitioners have been incorporated into our collective knowledge of pharmaceutical care.
Application Information
The Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum is successful only when all participants are actively engaged, open and prepared to share ideas, challenge current practice, and envision what is possible. This is achieved through discussion-based presentations, active learning groups, and the creation of an environment that is relaxed and allows for creativity.
The Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum will consist of approximately 1 hour time slots for selected presentations, activities, and discussions. As a potential participant to the Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum, we ask that you submit an application describing how you would like to use your allocated time to present your vision, generate discussion, and challenge the group. Formal presentations should account for less than 30 minutes of the hour time slot. Some example activities may include:
- Case-based Discussions
- Debate Formats
- World Café Format
- Craft Projects
- Role Playing/Skits
- Lecture/Presentation with active participation
- Mindful Activity (such as yoga or meditation)
Although technology will be available (screen, projector) the use of active learning techniques versus traditional PowerPoint presentations is preferred.
Up to 70 applicants will be selected to attend. Not all attendees will be asked to present. Please be thoughtful when completing your application and keep your submission to no more than 2 pages. In your application, please include each applicant’s full name, email address, and a short biosketch (a one paragraph summary of academic, work, and professional experiences). Additionally please include 2-3 learning objectives for your session. Please see attached application form.
Group and individual applications will be accepted. Group applications should include 4 or less group members and should include a description of how each team member will contribute to the group’s presentation.
To apply for the conference, submit your completed application form to PCareLyceum@gmail.com
On October 22nd, the organizers will begin to review applications. You will be notified on or before November 11th, 2016 whether your application has been accepted. For first time participants, challenge yourselves to think beyond what you currently know and see in pharmaceutical care. For previous attendees, look beyond your current practices and previous experience
at the Deep Portage discussions and come up with new ideas to share and shape our future.
Conference Format and Logistics
The Pharmaceutical Care Lyceum is not a passive environment. Each participant is not only encouraged but expected to be engaged and participate. However, the conference will be FUN – as thoughtful dialogue and FUN are not mutually exclusive!
The conference will be held at the Deep Portage Learning Center, 2197 Nature Center Dr NW, Hackensack, MN 56452. Deep Portage is a conservation and environmental learning center. The basic accommodations allow time for reflection and a new way of connecting with each other and our environment. It’s approximately a 3.5 hour drive from the Twin Cities metro or 2.75 hours from Duluth. Transportation will not be provided, car-pooling is strongly encouraged. Additional information can be found at: www.deep-portage.org
Lodging, meals, and all conference materials will be provided for a total cost of $249 per participant. There will be ample opportunities to interact socially and enjoy indoor and outdoor activities (such as rock climbing, cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, campfires, and more!).
