Keynote Presentation: e-Health and Clinical Health Information Exchange

and Center for Health Informatics, Minnesota Department of Health

This presentation has been designed to inform pharmacists of current activities of the Minnesota e-Health Initiative and opportunities available to pharmacists to engage in clinical health information exchange. The session will explore the significance of interoperability across the continuum of care, and the important role of pharmacists as key participants in the Learning Health System.

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the Minnesota e-Health Initiative mission, the current state of EHR adoption and use in Minnesota, and options available for clinical health information exchange.
  2. Discuss the importance of interoperability across the full continuum of care, and initiatives underway to facilitate adoption and effective use across all provider settings.
  3. Describe the increasing importance of electronic health records, data, and analytics in managing patient populations to succeed in evolving payment models.
  4. Discuss the important role of pharmacists as key participants in the Learning Health System.

About the Presenter

Laurie DeeganMarty LaVenture is director of the Office of Health IT and e-Health at the Minnesota Department of Health. Dr. LaVenture leads the statewide Minnesota e-Health Initiative, a public – private collaborative chartered in 2004 to advance HIT adoption and use in Minnesota. He has a master’s degree in epidemiology and a PhD in Health Informatics from the University of Minnesota. Dr. LaVenture is an adjunct core member of the faculty at the University of Minnesota in Health Informatics. He is lead author for the revised chapter on public health informatics in upcoming 4th edition of the Shortliffe & Cimino’s Textbook of Biomedical Informatics (BMI). He is an elected fellow of the American college of medical informatics, and is a member of the ASTHO e-health policy committee; Dr. LaVenture has authored or co-authored articles and scientific publications, he has delivered presentations to state and national audiences and he has received multiple awards for his work and accomplishments.

  1. Introduce 2013-2014 Influenza Products
  2. Define and compare quadrivalent flu vaccines and trivalent flu vaccines
  3. Explain the benefits of quadrivalent vaccines
  4. Discuss quadrivalent shortage and its effect on patients
  5. Review considerations in determining which flu vaccine to choose for patients

About the Presenter

Laurie DeeganLaurie Deegan, pharmacist, is the Ambulatory Training Manager at Fairview Pharmacy Services (FPS). After 20 years in the retail pharmacy setting as a pharmacist, she transitioned to the role of Ambulatory Training Manager in 2011 at the corporate Fairview Pharmacy Services office. She manages and coordinates training for 600+ FPS employees including new hire training, ongoing training, continuing education and immunization training. She received her B.S. in Pharmacy at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Campus. Laurie has been instrumental in the expansion and development of Fairview Pharmacy Services as it has grown from one pharmacy to 32 retail sites.

Pain Management: Challenges with Regulations

In this case-based session, participants will learn the latest regulatory information that may impact howthey manage patients with chronic pain. Informationabout state prescription monitoring programs, potentialrescheduling of pain medications, REMS programs,alternative pain management, best pain managementpractices and dealing with early refills will be discussed.

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the current status of state prescription drugmonitoring programs and how they may be used tohelp in management of pain medications.
  2. Explain the current status of FDA REMS programs and discussions related to rescheduling painmedications.
  3. Discuss current pain management best practices andtools to help monitor chronic pain patients.
  4. Name strategies for dealing with problematic issuesrelated to pain medications, such as early refills,doctor shopping, and potential addiction.

About the Presenter

Marsha MillonigMarsha Millonig is the President/CEO of Catalyst Enterprises, LLC, a health care consulting firm dedicated to creating change. It specializes in projects that allow pharmacy, distribution and manufacturing clients to be more efficient and/or value-added providers of healthcare services toward improved health outcomes.

Prior to forming her company, Marsha was with the Healthcare Distribution Management Association (HDMA) and headed the philanthropic HDMA Healthcare Foundation, and also the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS.)

Her BS in Pharmacy is from the University of Minnesota and her M.B.A. from the University of Maryland. She completed the American Society of Health System Pharmacy (ASHP) Executive Residency in Association Management as well.

She a practicing pharmacist and pharmacist immunizer, working with both independent and chain pharmacies. Marsha is also an associate fellow of the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy’s Center for Leading Healthcare Change.

She’s a published author. Her latest work, "100 MTM Tips for Pharmacists” was published by and is available through APhA.

Biosimilars: Why Generic Substitution Laws Matter

  1. Understand the differences in chemical and biological properties of small and large-molecule drugs including biologics and biosimilars
  2. Understand the current Minnesota statute regarding the substitution of prescribed medications
  3. Describe the emergence of biosimilars as a result of expirations of many biologics’ patents
  4. Discuss the current status and structure of the FDA approval pathways for small-molecule drugs, biologics, and biosimilars
  5. Discuss recent state biosimilar legislation and its possible impact on pharmacists

About the Presenter

Dave Hoang is a Clinical Pharmacy Program Coordinator for the Minnesota Multistate Contracting Alliance for Pharmacy (MMCAP). MMCAP is a group purchasing organization operated by Minnesota Department of Administration. Dave’s key responsibilities include providing professional consultation and expertise on drug purchasing, pricing, and manufacturer and distributor negotiations to MMCAP and its 50 participating entities (48 states and the Cities of Chicago and Los Angeles). The position’s focus is on providing clinical expertise and pharmaceutical knowledge to support MMCAP activities, including analysis of therapeutic classes and formulary opportunities to obtain the best prices for over 4,000 facilities that participate in the MMCAP program. Dave also works as a part-time pharmacist for Walmart Stores, Inc. and Fairview Pharmacy Services.

Dave received his PharmD and MBA degrees from the University of Minnesota. Dave serves as an affiliate of the Medical Industry Leadership Institute at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management. Dave is a member of ASHP and serves as Vice-Chair of the ASHP Section of Ambulatory Care Practitioners’ Education Steering Committee. Dave is also a member of the Minnesota Pharmacists Association and serves as Co-Chair of the Editorial Advisory Board. He also serves on MPhA’s Public Affairs Committee, Organizational Affairs Committee, and Education and Events Committee.

Pathophysiology of COPD and the New GOLD Guidelines

This course will include a live demonstration of spirometry, basic COPD pathophysiology, and an update of the changes in the new COPD 2012 GOLD guidelines.

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Define COPD and discuss its pathophysiology
  2. Stage COPD Severity using the new COPD 2012 GOLD criteria and suggest guideline based treatment and management
  3. Describe a spirometry test and discuss how it is used in the diagnosis of COPD

About the Presenter

Ed CorazallaEd is currently the director of the pulmonary function lab at the University of Minnesota. He teaches courses for the medical school and nurse practitioner program about asthma and COPD, as well as serving as faculty for the residency and fellows program. Each year, Ed presents at several national conferences. Ed has multiple publications and is currently involved with over 20 research studies. Presently, Ed is the chairman of the COPD coalition for American Lung Association and is working on numerous projects to improve the care and lives of those with respiratory illness.

Legislative Update – the Pharmacy Practice Act Joint Task Force

This session will provide an overview of current legislative work of the Pharmacy Practice Act Joint Task Force (PPAJTF) to update the Pharmacy Practice Act to address specific barriers to fully leveraging the knowledge and services of pharmacists in managing total cost of care.

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe how the state practice act work aligns with national efforts to achieve provider status in the Social Security Act
  2. Outline the recommended changes to the Pharmacy Practice Act for the 2014 Legislative Session
  3. Describe the multi-year approach the PPAFT is taking to address specific barriers to fully leveraging the knowledge and services of pharmacists in managing total cost of care.

About the Presenter

Paul Krogh is currently Director of Pharmacy at North Memorial Medical Center (NMMC) where he oversees inpatient pharmacy, outpatient pharmacy and medication therapy management services. Prior to joining the NMMC pharmacy team, he was a pharmacy Manager at Abbott Northwestern Hospital from 2006 - 2013 where he oversaw non-sterile dispensing, technology and automation, medication safety and Emergency Department clinical services. He earned his Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 2004. Paul subsequently completed a two-year residency in Pharmacy Practice Management at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics while obtaining a Master's in Health System Pharmacy Administration from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Paul serves as a primary preceptor for the pharmacy management residency rotation. Paul is board-certified in pharmacotherapy and has interests in leadership development, transitions of care, emergency medicine, and informatics. He is currently president for the Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists and a member of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacist’s Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers Advisory Group on Pharmacy Business Management. Previous professional organizational involvement includes Minnesota Society of Health-System Pharmacists Board Member at Large and American Society of Health-System Pharmacist’s Section of Pharmacy Practice Managers Advisory Group on Workload and Productivity.
