Medical Cannabis Primer and Minnesota Program Update
Description
In 2014 Minnesota became the 22nd state to legalize cannabis for medical use and the Minnesota program is different than many others in the United States. In this presentation we will discuss the history of cannabis, including how it became a Schedule 1 controlled substance, the pharmacology of cannabis and an overview and update on the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program. The talk will also look at the unique role pharmacists plays in the Minnesota Program.
Objectives
- Review the history of cannabis
- Understand the endocannabinoid system and how THC and CBD affect CB1 and CB2 receptors.
- Discuss the pharmacology of cannabis.
- Provide an overview and update on the Minnesota Medical Cannabis Program, including qualifying conditions and program statistics.

Jeff Shapiro
Jeff Sharpiro graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1980. He worked in retail for 37 years in Hibbing including owning Shapiro's Drug Store and then managing a retail pharmacy for both Fairview and Walgreens. In June 2016 he was hired by LeafLine Labs and and since July 1, 2016 has been the staff pharmacist at their Hibbing Dispensary.
