Description

In 2012, the CDC declared prescription drug abuse an epidemic. As a means to combat prescription drug abuse, the CDC recommends one of the efforts include prescription monitoring programs. The MN PMP was created as a tool to assist in the fight against prescription drug abuse, and pharmacists play an important role in that fight. In using the PMP, pharmacists can identify individuals that may be abusing, misusing, or diverting controlled substances. This ability to identify individuals enables healthcare providers to offer help and support to those who may need it most. This webinar will provide an overview of what the PMP is, under what circumstances the law allows providers to access the database, how to acquire delegates, some quick tips for system usage, and how the PMP is fighting prescription drug abuse with Controlled Substance Insight Alerts.

Objectives:

  1. Understand the purpose of the Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) and when it is appropriate to access it
  2. Recognize the dispensing pharmacist’s role with data integrity and the PMP
  3. Have a better understanding of how to access and utilize the database as well as acquire delegates
  4. Be aware of Controlled Substance Insight Alerts and what to do if you receive one
