Description

This webinar will review information pertinent to the 2016 influenza season, including formulation changes, and epidemiology information. We will also review new updates from the CDC toolkit on storage and best practices for running your off-site influenza clinics. Finally, we will review tips and strategies for immunizing children with the exit of flumist this season. The target audience includes pharmacists already participating in immunization services, and pharmacists interested in starting to immunize.

Objectives:

  1. Highlight information new the 2016/2017 influenza season, and targeted populations where vaccination is most critical.
  2. Review new storage guidelines and updates from the CDC toolkit.
  3. Review best practices for off-site influenza and vaccination clinics.
  4. Discuss strategies for building your immunization practice.
  5. Discuss and share tips and tricks for vaccinating children and other needle shy patients.

Presenter: Michelle Johnson, BCACP, Pharmacist, Fairview Pharmacy Services

Michelle Johnson is a community pharmacist for Fairview Pharmacy, where she has worked since 2014. She graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Pharmacy in 1997 with her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Michelle attained BPS certification in Ambulatory Care in 2014, and completed her APHA MTM certification in 2016.

Previous to joining Fairview Pharmacy Michelle worked for the Fond du Lac Reservation in Cloquet, MN for two and a half years, and Goodrich Pharmacy for 14 years. While at her previous positions she has created and practiced under collaborative protocols, delivered Pharmaceutical Care and MTM in a community pharmacy, and established MTM in 2 new clinical practice sites within a partnering clinic. She has been certified and participating in immunizing since 2003, establishing and running a successful immunization program for Goodrich Pharmacy that served as the first pharmacy enrolled site for the MN VFC program.

She currently immunizes year round at Fairview, and both her practice sites are MN VFC enrolled. Other areas of interest include diabetes and women’s health. Michelle is a second term MPHA board member, serves on Minnesota Department of Health’s Pandemic Preparedness Workgroup, and the National Association of County and City Health Officials Pharmacy Partners Workgroup. She also is an active American Pharmacist Association member, with a published article in 2010 in JAPHA. She has been recognized in 2002 by MPHA as a Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year, 2007 by APHA as a One to One Patient Counseling Recognition Recipient, and 2011 by APHA as an Immunization Champion Award winner.

Continuing Education:

This presentation is being submitted to the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy for Continuing Education credit approval (one hour).

To receive Board of Pharmacy credits for this program the following must be completed:

  • Full participation/completion of webinar either during the live program or the archived presentation

  • Completion of survey post webinar acknowledging participation

Board of Pharmacy credit processing takes place on the 15th of each month.

The Minnesota Pharmacists Association is accredited by the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
